bourgeois

Bourgeois (or bourgeoisie) - a French word for “middle.” It’s the word I’ve begun using as a tongue-in-cheek label for anything that I feel represents my experience growing up in middle-class Australian suburbia. I’ve begun taking opportunities on misty mornings to photograph these sightings. The perfect hedges and lawns, the endless telephone lines, the samey houses and the stiff fences between them. Why does a place full of vibrant human life and curiosities leave such a sober concretish taste in my mouth. My best guess is that in its creation, not much thought was ever given to things beyond modern practicality and function. So now we have this. There’s a distinct unreality to it when you put on your Truman tie and walk around, so that’s what I’ve tried to capture.
